Office Vastu Complete Guide: How to Arrange a Workplace

Where the owner, accounts, reception and teams sit in a workplace, measured in 16 zones, with corrections that work even in a rented office.

By Raghavendra Hebbur · August 19, 2026 · Updated October 3, 2026 · 6 min read

This office vastu complete guide shows how we arrange a workplace so that decisions, money and daily work each sit where they are best supported. The short version: the decision-maker sits in the south-west facing north or east, finance sits in a stable and secure place, reception and visitor flow use the north and east, and heavy storage goes to the south and west.

All of it can be done through layout, seating, storage, colour and lighting. That matters in Bangalore, where most offices are rented floors in shared buildings and nobody wants to touch a wall. We are Vardhini Vastu, and this is the approach Raghavendra Hebbur uses in office assessments across the city.

What this office vastu complete guide covers

Office Vastu has three jobs: give leadership a stable seat, keep money and records secure, and let people and work move without friction. This guide covers:

  • How to measure an office floor and find its centre and true north
  • The entrance and reception
  • Where owners, managers, finance and teams sit
  • Meeting rooms, pantry, server rooms and toilets
  • Open-plan, co-working and rented offices
  • Common issues and corrections that need no construction

Start with the flow, not the furniture

Before placing a single desk we trace three movements: how visitors enter and where they wait, how work passes between teams, and where money is handled and recorded. An office whose layout fights these flows feels tiring to work in, whatever its interiors cost.

Traditional guidance: the classical texts describe zones by purpose, with stability in the south-west, movement in the north-west and openness in the north-east. What we measure: whether the real use of each zone on your floor matches that purpose, and where it does not, how big the gap is.

Measuring the office: centre, true north and 16 zones

We find the centre of the office from its full outline, then divide the floor into 16 zones of about 22.5 degrees each. Commercial floors have steel, lift cores and heavy wiring that pull a compass, so we take readings at several points and correct magnetic north to true north using the local declination. You can check the declination for any location on the NOAA magnetic declination calculator.

If your office occupies part of a floor, we read your tenancy, not the whole building. If it spans two floors, each floor is read separately and the leadership and finance placements are checked on both.

Entrance and reception

The office entrance is where clients, staff and deliveries arrive. Its exact zone matters more than which side of the building it faces. Reception works best near the entrance in the north or east part of the office, open and well lit, with seating for visitors that does not look straight into the work area.

Visitors should not have to walk through the core team to reach a meeting room. Where they must, a clear path with good lighting and a screen beside the desks keeps both flows calm. Our main door guide explains how entrance positions are read.

Where the owner or founder sits

The south-west of the office is traditionally associated with authority and stability. The owner or founder sits there where possible, facing north or east, with a solid wall behind the chair and no door directly behind. In a startup without cabins, the same rule applies to the founder desk.

We have a separate guide on CEO and manager cabin Vastu that covers desk size, visitor chairs and what to do when the only cabin is in the wrong zone.

Accounts, cash and records

Where money is counted, stored or recorded deserves care: a stable zone, a secure cabinet, and a seat where the person is not in the main walkway. The north is traditionally linked with wealth and is a common choice for accounts. Cash lockers are traditionally placed in a stable zone so that they open towards the north.

Our guide to accounts and finance department Vastu goes deeper into facing direction, safe placement and record storage.

Teams: sales, operations and focused work

  • Sales and client-facing teams: north and north-west areas, associated with movement and contact
  • Operations and administration: west and south, steady zones for routine work
  • Focused work such as engineering, design or analysis: quieter zones away from the entrance and pantry
  • HR and people functions: north-west or west, where conversations conclude and people move on

Desks are best placed so that people face north or east and do not sit with their back to the main door. Where this is not possible across a large floor, we prioritise team leads and anyone who handles money or clients.

Meeting rooms, pantry, server rooms and toilets

Meeting rooms suit the north-west or west, so meetings conclude and people move on. A boardroom where long-term decisions are taken can sit closer to the south-west. The pantry and any heating appliances suit the south-east. Server racks and UPS units are heavy and warm, and fit the south or south-east better than the north-east.

Toilets are fixed by the building. Where one falls in the north-east, keep it closed, clean, dry and light in colour, and avoid storing anything heavy in that zone.

Open-plan and co-working offices

Open-plan floors make Vastu easier in one way: furniture moves. Rotate desk clusters so that most people face north or east, keep the centre of the floor clear of storage and printers, and give the senior person a seat with solid backing, even if that is a tall cabinet rather than a wall.

In co-working spaces you may control only a few desks. Choose seats in the south and west part of the space for leadership, and keep the team together rather than scattered across the floor.

For tenants and rented floors

Nothing in this guide needs landlord approval. Seating, desk orientation, storage, colour and lighting are all within a tenant’s control. If you are about to sign a lease, a short review of two or three shortlisted floors is far cheaper than rearranging a fitted office later.

Common issues we see in Bangalore offices

  • The owner seated near the entrance so they can see everyone
  • Heavy servers, files or storage in the north-east
  • People seated with their back to the main door
  • Clutter, printers or a column in the centre of the office
  • The accounts team in the busiest walkway
  • A dark, crowded reception that visitors walk past

Each of these is corrected through placement, light and colour. Our page on zero demolition Vastu corrections shows how.

Colour and lighting by zone

Colour and light are the quickest office Vastu corrections because they need no approvals and little downtime. As a general guide:

  • North and east: light, cool tones and plenty of daylight; avoid heavy dark panelling
  • South-east: warmer accents suit the pantry and electrical areas
  • South and west: earthy, grounded tones and steady lighting for routine work
  • South-west: solid, darker finishes behind the senior seat to support stability
  • Centre: keep it bright and open, with no stacked boxes or dead corners

Lighting matters as much as paint. A dim north-east or a dark reception is one of the most common gaps we find, and better fixtures often fix it within a day.

Before you lease or fit out an office

The cheapest moment for office Vastu is before the interior designer finalises the layout. At that stage, moving the founder cabin from one corner to another is a line on a drawing, not a rebuild. Share the floor plate, the proposed seating and the direction of the main door, and we can read the plan before work begins.

If you are comparing floors in different buildings, look at the position of the entrance on each floor, where the toilets and lift core fall, and whether the south-west corner is usable for leadership. Our online Vastu consultation works well for this, since it runs from plans and photographs. An online assessment uses traditional Vastu only, the 16-zone map and the 3×3 grid drawn on your plan; geopathic stress readings need a site visit.

Getting a measured office assessment

This office vastu complete guide gives you the principles. A site visit adds measured directions, a Lecher Antenna reading for geopathic stress where relevant, and a written report within 48 hours that ranks each finding. Commercial assessments start from ₹51,000; full details are on the fees page. To see what we cover, visit our office Vastu service or commercial Vastu page, and when it suits you, book a consultation.
