Vastu for Home Office and Work From Home

Where to put a desk in a Bangalore flat, which way to face, how to set up a video-call backdrop and get light right, following Vastu without demolition.

Vastu for home office planning has become a real need in Bangalore since so many people now work from home for part or all of the week. A desk squeezed into a bedroom corner or a laptop on the dining table was fine for a few months. For years of daily work, where and how you sit starts to matter a great deal.

This guide covers the choices we help families make: which zone of a flat suits a workspace, which way to face, how to set up a sensible video-call backdrop, and how to get light and wiring right. It separates traditional guidance from what we measure on site, and it needs no demolition and no products.

Why a home office needs its own thinking

An office building is planned around work. A home is planned around family life, and the workspace has to fit in wherever there is room. That usually means compromise: a spare bedroom that is also a guest room, a corner of the living room, or a desk at the foot of the bed.

Vastu gives a framework for making that compromise well. It tells you which parts of the home suit focused work, which way to sit and what to keep around you. Our office Vastu complete guide covers commercial offices; this article is about the home.

Traditional guidance for a workspace

Traditional guidance: the North is associated in Vastu with water, movement and new contacts, and the East with air, morning light and fresh starts. Both are considered good zones to work in and good directions to face. The West is associated with steady effort and suits long, focused work. The South-West, the zone of stability, is traditionally the seat of the head of a business.

  • Face North or East while working.
  • Keep a solid wall behind your chair, not a window or a door.
  • Keep the North-East corner of the room light and uncluttered.
  • Place heavy storage on the South or West side.
  • Avoid sitting directly under a beam.

What we measure first

What we measure: we take a compass reading from true north on site, correct it for magnetic declination, and divide the flat into 16 zones of about 22.5 degrees. The declination for any location can be checked on the NOAA magnetic declination calculator.

This matters more than people expect. A room marked as East on a brochure is often several degrees off, and in a small flat that can be the difference between two zones. For online clients we guide you through taking the reading yourself with a phone compass and a floor plan. Our 16 zones explained guide shows the wheel.

Choosing a zone in a flat

Most Bangalore apartments give you three or four realistic options. In rough order of preference, from a Vastu point of view:

  • A spare bedroom in the North, East or West, used mainly as a study.
  • A corner of the living room on the North or East side.
  • A children’s room or guest room in the West or North-West, shared by time of day.
  • The master bedroom in the South-West, if nothing else is possible, set apart from the bed.

We generally advise against a desk in the kitchen, in a passage, or right next to the main door, simply because these spaces are busy and noisy. The North-East corner of the home is better kept light and open, though a small, tidy desk on its edge facing East is acceptable.

Desk facing and position

Once you have the room, position the desk so you face North or East while working. If the wall arrangement only allows facing West, that is workable; facing South for long hours is the option tradition least prefers.

Practical rules sit alongside the direction. Try to see the door from your chair rather than sitting with your back to it. Keep a little space behind the chair so you can move freely. Avoid placing the desk so the screen faces a bright window, which causes glare, or so that your back is to the window, which puts your face in shadow.

A small table pushed against a wall can still follow all of this. Vastu for home office set-ups is about orientation and order, not about size.

A sensible video-call backdrop

Video calls add a modern question: what sits behind you on camera? Here Vastu and common sense point the same way.

  • A plain, light wall or a tidy bookshelf works best.
  • Keep the bed, laundry and the toilet door out of the frame.
  • Sit facing the window or a light source, so light falls on your face, not behind you.
  • Raise the laptop so the camera is at eye level.
  • A healthy plant in the frame is fine; avoid dried or dead plants.
  • Keep the background the same each day, so it does not become a clutter shelf.

If you face North or East as suggested, the wall behind you is usually South or West, which is also where tradition places solid walls and heavy storage. A bookshelf there serves both purposes.

Light and ventilation

Good daylight is the single biggest comfort factor in a home office. North light is soft and even through the day; East light is bright in the morning. Both suit work. West light gets harsh by late afternoon, so a curtain or blind on that side helps.

For right-handed people, light from the left avoids shadows on paper; the reverse for left-handed people. Add a desk lamp for evening work and keep the room ventilated. A stuffy room makes a long day feel longer, whatever direction you face.

Electronics, wiring and storage

Traditional guidance: the South-East is the zone of fire and suits electrical equipment. If you can, place the router, printer and UPS on the South-East side of the room. Keep cables tidy and off the floor.

Files, cupboards and heavy storage belong on the South or West walls. Keep the North-East part of the room clear. Old papers and dead equipment collect quickly in a home office; clearing them is one of the simplest Vastu corrections there is, and it costs nothing.

Working from the bedroom

Many people have no choice but to work from the bedroom. If so, keep the desk on the opposite side from the bed, face North or East, and make sure the bed is not behind you on camera. At the end of the day, close the laptop and put work things in a drawer or box, so the room returns to being a bedroom at night.

A curtain, open shelf or folding screen can mark off the work corner without any construction. Our Vastu for bedroom guide covers bed placement in the same room.

Two people working from home

When both partners work from home, put the person with more calls in the quieter room and the other in a living room corner. If you must share a room, sit at right angles or back to back rather than facing each other across a desk, and keep both seats facing North or East where possible. Separate desks are always better than one shared table for full-time work.

Children studying at home follow similar Vastu guidance: a desk facing East or North, good daylight, and no screen in view of the bed. Where a parent and a child share a room during the day, give the parent the seat with the solid wall behind and the child the seat nearest the window. These are small Vastu adjustments that make a shared room work better for everyone.

Colours for a home office

Light, calm colours work best: off-white, pale green, light grey or soft blue. Avoid strong reds or very dark walls in a small workroom. Our Vastu colours for home guide explains the zone colours in more detail.

What layout can and cannot do

A Vastu for home office arrangement makes a workspace more comfortable, better lit, more orderly and easier to concentrate in. That is a sound reason to do it.

It cannot promise a promotion, more clients or higher income. Those depend on your work, your market and many things outside the room. We say this plainly because we would rather you trust our advice than expect too much of it.

Getting your workspace assessed

We check the home office as part of every home consultation, and we can also review it on its own through an online Vastu consultation using your floor plan and photographs. For a dedicated business premises, see our Vastu for office service. The Vastu for home page explains the home visit, and you can book a Vastu consultation when you are ready. You receive a written report within 48 hours. An online assessment uses traditional Vastu only, the 16-zone map and the 3×3 grid drawn on your plan; geopathic stress readings need a site visit.

    Frequently asked questions.

Which direction should I face while working from home?

Traditional Vastu guidance suggests facing North or East while you work, with a solid wall behind you. In a small flat, facing East or North from any available corner is a good start.

Can I work from my bedroom?

Yes, many people have to. Keep the desk away from the bed, face North or East if possible, keep the bed out of your video-call background, and pack work away at the end of the day.

Will a Vastu home office increase my income?

We do not promise income or career results. A well placed, well lit desk makes work more comfortable and focused. Results depend on your work, not on layout alone.
