Vastu for Balcony and Utility Area

How to use an apartment balcony and utility area well in Vastu: plants, heavy pots, washing machine, storage and seating, with no demolition and nothing to buy.

Vastu for balcony planning matters more in apartments than most people realise. In a flat, the balcony is often the only open space you have: it brings in light and air, holds the plants, and very often also holds the washing machine, the drying stand and everything that does not fit inside. How it is used shapes how the whole home feels.

This guide covers traditional Vastu guidance for balconies and utility areas, what we measure on site, and practical advice on plants, heavy pots, washing machines, storage, seating and enclosures. It is written for Bangalore apartments, and everything here can be done without demolition or buying any special product.

Why balconies matter in apartment Vastu

An independent house has a garden, a terrace and setbacks on every side. An apartment has walls, a main door and one or two balconies. In Vastu, open space allows light and air to enter, so in a flat the balcony takes on the role that open ground plays around a house.

That is why a balcony full of broken furniture, old cartons and an overflowing drying stand is worth fixing first. It costs nothing and changes how much light and air reach the rooms behind it. Our Vastu for apartments complete guide covers the rest of the flat.

Traditional guidance on balcony direction

Traditional guidance: open spaces, verandas and balconies are preferred on the North, East and North-East sides of a building, because these receive gentle morning light and are associated with water, air and openness. The South and West sides are traditionally kept heavier and more closed.

  • North, East or North-East balcony: the traditional ideal; keep it light, open and uncluttered.
  • North-West balcony: suits the utility area, washing machine and drying.
  • South-East balcony: suitable for a kitchen utility area.
  • South or West balcony: common and acceptable; use it for heavier pots, shading and seating.

In apartments you rarely choose the balcony direction, so the real question is how to use the balcony you have.

What we measure on site

What we measure: we take a compass reading from true north, correct it for magnetic declination and divide the flat into 16 zones of about 22.5 degrees each. The declination for any location is available on the NOAA magnetic declination calculator.

Balconies are often at angles in modern towers, and builder brochures label them loosely. A balcony sold as East facing may sit across the East and South-East zones. We mark exactly which zones each balcony occupies before advising on its use. Our 16 zones explained guide shows the full wheel.

Plants on the balcony

Traditional guidance: a tulsi plant is traditionally kept on the North, East or North-East side. Small flowering plants and herbs suit the North and East. Larger, taller plants suit the South and West, where they also give shade from the afternoon sun.

  • Keep plants healthy; remove dead or dried plants promptly.
  • Thorny plants such as cactus are traditionally kept out of the main living spaces; if you grow them, keep them on the South or West side.
  • Climbers and creepers are fine on a grill or trellis, trimmed so they do not block light into the rooms.
  • Use trays under pots so water does not stain the floor or drip onto the flat below.

Money plants and other popular indoor plants are fine anywhere they grow well. We do not attach any promise of money or luck to a plant.

Heavy pots and planters

Weight is one of the clearest balcony rules in Vastu: heavy objects go on the South and West sides, and the North-East is kept light. Large clay or cement planters, raised beds and stone features should sit along the South or West edge of the balcony where the layout allows.

There is also a practical point. Balconies are designed for a limited load. Before adding several large planters, a raised garden bed or a heavy water feature, check with your association or a structural engineer, and make sure the waterproofing and drain outlets can cope. Vastu never asks you to overload a slab.

If your only balcony is on the North-East and you love gardening, you do not have to give it up. Use lighter pots, plastic or fibre planters, smaller plants and hanging baskets, and keep the floor area as open as you can. This is how we usually apply Vastu for balcony gardens in practice: the spirit of the rule, a light and open North-East, is kept, and the family still enjoys its plants. Larger plants can go on a South or West window ledge or a second balcony if the flat has one.

Washing machine and utility area

Traditional guidance: the North-West, associated with air and movement, is the first choice for a washing machine, drying stand and laundry area. The South-East, the fire zone, is an acceptable second choice because the machine is electrical. The North-East is avoided for a utility area.

  • Place the washing machine on a stand, level and away from the balcony edge.
  • Keep it covered from rain and direct sun to protect the electrics.
  • Run the outlet hose cleanly to the drain; standing water damages tiles and attracts mosquitoes.
  • Fold away the drying stand when not in use if the balcony is also a sitting space.

In practice, the plumbing point usually decides where the machine goes. If it sits in the North-East, keep the area clean, dry and uncluttered rather than moving pipes.

Utility storage

The kitchen utility balcony often holds gas cylinders, the water purifier, cleaning supplies and brooms. Keep spare gas cylinders in the South-East portion where possible, upright, ventilated and away from anything that can catch fire. Keep brooms and mops out of sight, traditionally on the South-West or West side, not in the North-East.

Most importantly, do not let the utility area become a store for things you no longer use. Old appliances, empty paint tins and broken chairs are the most common balcony clutter we see, and removing them is the simplest Vastu correction in the flat.

Seating, swings and use

If you sit on the balcony, place chairs on the South or West side so that you face North or East. A small table and two chairs are enough. A swing, or jhoola, is traditionally placed on the North or East side of an open space; check that the ceiling hook and slab can take it safely.

Lighting should be warm and soft. Light-coloured floor tiles keep the balcony bright and cool. Our Vastu colours for home guide covers colour choices by direction.

Grills, glass and enclosures

Many families enclose balconies with grills or glass for safety, dust or pigeons. Safety grills, especially where there are children, are always sensible, and Vastu does not object to them.

Fully enclosing a North or East balcony with fixed glass reduces the openness tradition values there. Sliding panels that open wide, or mesh, are a good compromise. Before any enclosure, check your association rules, as many societies restrict changes to the elevation.

Balconies by flat facing

  • East-facing flat: the main balcony often faces East; keep it open, light and planted with small plants.
  • North-facing flat: a North balcony suits sitting and plants; keep heavy pots to one side.
  • West-facing flat: use the West balcony for larger plants, shade and seating.
  • South-facing flat: a South balcony suits heavier planters and sun-loving plants; use curtains or blinds for afternoon heat.

Our facing guides, such as East facing house Vastu, cover each orientation in more detail.

What layout can and cannot do

Following Vastu for balcony use makes a flat lighter, airier, tidier and more pleasant. Those are real gains in small homes.

It does not guarantee wealth, health or any other life outcome, and no plant or object placed on a balcony will. Anyone who tells you otherwise is promising more than layout can deliver.

  • Dead plants left in pots for months.
  • A fully glazed East balcony that no longer opens.

    Frequently asked questions.

Which direction is best for a balcony in Vastu?

Traditional guidance prefers balconies and open spaces on the North, East or North-East. South and West balconies are common in flats and are fine with the right use: heavier pots, shading and seating there.

Where should the washing machine go?

The North-West is the traditional first choice for a washing machine and utility area, with the South-East as an alternative. Avoid the North-East corner. Drainage and plumbing usually decide the final position.

Do I need to buy Vastu plants or items for my balcony?

No. We sell no products. Ordinary healthy plants, sensible placement of pots and a clean, clutter-free balcony are all that is needed.
