This vastu renovation rental homes guide is for tenants who have been told that Vastu corrections mean breaking walls, moving doors or carrying out work a landlord would never approve. That is not accurate. Most Vastu corrections work through placement, colour, lighting and the way rooms are used, which makes them just as usable in a rented flat as in a home you own.
We explain what you can change without permission, how to handle the layout problems we see most often in Bangalore rentals, what to check before you sign a lease, and when it is worth asking the landlord for a little more.
Why renting does not rule out Vastu
A rented home has fixed walls, fixed plumbing and fixed doors. It also has movable furniture, beds that can face any direction, rooms that can swap uses, and surfaces that can change colour through curtains, rugs and covers. That second list is where most practical Vastu work happens in any home, rented or owned.
The zero demolition principle we apply to every assessment fits rentals naturally. We work with the layout that exists rather than assuming construction is the only path to a correction. If something genuinely cannot be helped without building work, we say so, and in a rental that usually means noting it and focusing your effort elsewhere.
What you can actually change in a rented home
These are all available to a tenant without landlord permission for structural work.
- Furniture position, including the bed, sofa, dining table and work desk.
- The direction you sleep and the direction you face while working.
- Which room is used for what: a spare room can become a study, a study can become a guest room.
- Where you keep valuables, documents and cash.
- Colour through curtains, bed linen, rugs, cushions and wall hangings.
- Wall paint, where your lease allows repainting.
- Lighting: lamp positions, bulb colour and how bright each zone feels.
- The placement of mirrors, plants and everyday objects.
- Decluttering, especially in the north-east and the centre of the flat.
What tradition says about non-structural remedies
Traditional guidance: classical Vastu remedies were never limited to structural intervention. Placement, colour and specific objects have always been part of the corrective toolkit, alongside structural change where it is possible. A rented home simply means working within the non-structural half of that toolkit.
What we measure: the orientation of the flat from true north, divided into the 16 zones of our VIDS method, each about 22.5 degrees. We then note what sits in each zone today, and look for the moves that bring the most benefit for the least disruption. For tenants we keep the list short and practical, because a correction that is never carried out helps nobody.
The entrance and living room
You cannot move the main door of a rented flat, but you can shape what happens around it. Keep the entrance well lit and free of shoe piles and parcels. A clean, uncluttered first few steps inside the door change how the home feels to everyone who enters. In the living room, the main seating usually works best along the south or west walls, so that people face north or east and the north-east of the room stays open.
A kitchen in the wrong zone
A kitchen in the north-east is a common builder default layout and a frequent concern in rented flats. It can be addressed through the stove position within the existing kitchen footprint and through colour choices, without moving the kitchen itself. Traditional guidance prefers the cook to face east, and the stove to sit towards the south-east part of whatever kitchen you have.
Keep water and fire apart where you can: the sink and the stove should not sit directly next to each other if the counter allows a small gap. Our article on Vastu for kitchen covers the details.
Bedrooms and sleeping direction
A bedroom door directly in line with the bed is another frequent rental constraint. It can be addressed by repositioning the bed relative to the fixed door, not by moving the door. Traditional guidance places the head of the bed towards the south or east, and avoids sleeping with the head towards the north.
In a flat with two bedrooms, the person who carries the main financial responsibility often does better in the room closer to the south-west. That is a decision you can make on the day you move in. More on this in Vastu for bedroom.
Toilets in the north-east
A toilet in the north-east is common in older rental buildings and cannot be relocated without major plumbing work. It is typically addressed through colour treatment, keeping the door closed when not in use, keeping the room very clean and dry, and placing simple corrective objects in the adjoining space, rather than through plumbing changes. We sell no products, so anything we suggest is something you can buy anywhere or already own.
Working from home in a rental
Many tenants in Bangalore now work from home at least part of the week. Choose a desk position where you face north or east, with a solid wall behind you rather than a window or a door. A small corner of the south-west or west of a bedroom often works better than a dining table in the middle of the flat. Good task lighting matters more than any other single change for a work corner.
Vastu renovation rental homes: lighting, colour and decluttering
These three tools are the backbone of any vastu renovation rental homes plan, because none of them need a landlord’s approval.
- Lighting: brighten weak or dark zones, especially the north-east and the entrance.
- Colour: earthy tones and heavier fabrics in the south-west; light, cool tones in the north-east; warm accents in the south-east.
- Decluttering: clear storage boxes and unused items from the north-east and from the centre of the home.
Common rental issues we see in Bangalore flats
- Kitchen in the north-east or north-west because of the building’s stack layout.
- Toilets on the north-east corner of the flat.
- Main door in the south-west zone.
- Heavy wardrobes built into the north-east bedroom wall.
- Overhead water tanks or a utility area in the north-east of the building.
Each of these has a practical, non-structural response, and none of them is a reason to panic or break a lease.
What to check before signing a lease
If you have not yet signed, the same pre-purchase logic applies. Checking the entrance direction, the room layout and the position of the kitchen and bedrooms before committing gives you more options than trying to correct after moving in. Use the apartment buying Vastu checklist, which applies to rental viewings as well as purchases. A phone compass gives a rough reading during a viewing; for a review we correct it for declination using the NOAA magnetic declination calculator.
When a landlord will allow more
Some landlords are open to paint colour changes or minor fixture adjustments if asked directly and framed as maintenance or improvement rather than a major request. A fresh coat of paint, a new light fitting or a shelf moved from one wall to another is often agreed. It is worth asking specifically rather than assuming the answer is no.
Online or site visit for tenants
Many tenants choose an online consultation at ₹5,000, working from a floor plan, compass readings and photographs. A site visit for a Bangalore apartment is ₹15,000 and includes Lecher Antenna readings for geopathic stress, which can guide where the bed and desk go. Either way you receive a written report within 48 hours. See online Vastu consultation and our fees page. An online assessment uses traditional Vastu only, the 16-zone map and the 3×3 grid drawn on your plan; geopathic stress readings need a site visit.
When you move out or move on
One advantage of a non-structural Vastu plan is that it travels with you. The bed direction, desk position, colour palette and decluttering habits you build in one rented flat can be applied in the next one within a day of moving in. Keep your report: the zone principles stay the same, and only the floor plan changes.
If you later buy a home, the experience of living with these adjustments also helps you judge layouts during viewings. Tenants who have tried a few Vastu changes tend to know quickly which points matter to them and which they can let go, which makes a purchase decision calmer and clearer.
