Vastu for Hotels and Restaurants

Measured 16-zone Vastu review for restaurants, cafes, cloud kitchens and hotels, covering kitchen, cash counter, dining, rooms and guest flow, with safety rules first.

Vastu for hotels and restaurants looks at how a hospitality space actually works: where the kitchen fire sits, where cash is handled, how guests enter, wait, dine and sleep, and where stock is stored. We map all of it in 16 measured zones from true north, then suggest changes you can make without breaking anything.

Food safety, FSSAI requirements, fire safety, exhaust and gas line rules, and your local licences always come first. A Vastu preference never justifies moving a gas bank, blocking an exit or changing a kitchen flow that your food safety plan depends on. Where the two disagree, we follow the rule and record why.

What we assess in a hotel or restaurant

  • Entrance, signage approach and the first view a guest gets on walking in
  • Reception or host stand, and how queues form at busy times
  • Kitchen: cooking range, gas bank, wash area, cold storage and pass
  • Cash counter and billing desk
  • Dining hall seating, lighting and noise
  • Guest rooms: bed position, door, bathroom and window directions
  • Dry and cold storage, linen rooms, back office and staff areas

A small restaurant may need only a few hours. A hotel with several floors of rooms is read floor by floor, with typical room plans grouped so the report stays usable.

Traditional guidance and what we measure

Traditional guidance: classical texts link the southeast with fire, so it is the preferred zone for cooking. The northeast is kept light and clean, the north is linked with flow of resources, and the southwest with weight, stability and the owner. These are guidance, not laws of nature.

What we measure: we take compass readings on site, correct them for magnetic declination using a reference such as the NOAA magnetic declination calculator, and divide the floor into 16 zones of about 22.5 degrees. Every fixture is placed in its measured zone. A kitchen that looks like it is in the southeast from the road may measure quite differently.

Kitchens: the heart of the business

In most restaurants the kitchen position was fixed by drainage, gas and exhaust long before anyone thought about Vastu. We do not ask you to move it. We look at the cook position, the direction the chef faces at the main range, and whether water and fire sit right next to each other.

Practical corrections include shifting the main burner line where the hood allows it, separating the wash area from the range with a counter or rack, keeping the northeast of the kitchen free of waste bins, and improving light where staff work. Every suggestion is checked against your food safety flow: raw to cooked, dirty to clean.

Cash counter and billing

The traditional preference is for the cashier to face north or east, with the cash drawer opening towards the north. In a busy restaurant, the counter must also be visible from the door, close to the pass and safe for staff. We look for an arrangement that satisfies the working needs first, then improves direction where possible, often just by turning the counter or moving the drawer.

Dining areas and guest flow

Guest flow matters more than any single direction. People should see where to go, wait without blocking the door, and reach their table without passing the wash area. In Vastu terms, heavy features such as bars, buffets and partitions sit better in the south and west, with the north and east left more open and lit.

For dining halls, we often suggest moving a heavy display unit away from the northeast, re-arranging tables so the main walkway is clear, softening harsh lighting, and using warmer colours on south and west walls. None of this needs building work.

Guest rooms and reception

For hotel rooms we read a typical room of each type rather than every room. The traditional preference is for the bed head to face south or east and for the bed not to sit directly below a beam or in line with the door. Where furniture can turn, we show how. Where it cannot, we leave it.

At reception, we look at whether the desk faces arriving guests, whether the lobby has a clear sightline, and whether luggage and storage are cluttering the north or east side of the space.

Storage, back office and staff areas

Heavy storage, dry stock and linen are traditionally best in the south and west. Cold rooms and freezers are placed where your engineers and the food safety plan need them. We check the owner or manager cabin, which is usually best in the southwest, and staff rest areas, which are often forgotten and affect how a team feels at the end of a long shift.

Common issues we see

  • Wash area and cooking range on the same short wall
  • Cash counter tucked behind a pillar where the cashier cannot see the door
  • Bins, gas cylinders or junk stored in the northeast
  • Entrance doors that open straight onto a queue
  • Dark dining halls lit only by bright white tubes
  • Guest rooms with beds directly under beams

Most of these are improved by placement, light and room use. The report says clearly which items are not worth changing.

Corrections without demolition

We work only with placement, colour, lighting, room use and decluttering. We sell no products, no pyramids and no yantras, and we take no commission from builders or suppliers. Read our guide to zero-demolition Vastu corrections or the full page on Vastu remedies without demolition. If a change truly needs construction, for example during a planned renovation, we tell you plainly.

Who this is for

Restaurant owners choosing a new location, cloud kitchens planning a fit-out, cafes, boutique hotels, service apartments and guest houses. For retail frontage see Vastu for shops; for back offices see Vastu for office. Layout can make a space easier to work in and more welcoming. It cannot promise footfall, ratings or profit, and we will not claim it does.

Cloud kitchens, cafes and small outlets

Not every food business has a dining hall. A cloud kitchen is mostly range, prep counter, cold storage and a dispatch window where delivery riders collect orders. Here we focus on the cook position, the dispatch point and where packaging and stock pile up, because clutter in a small kitchen quickly blocks both work and safe movement.

For a cafe or a small takeaway counter, the questions are simpler: which way the counter faces, where the coffee machine and its water line sit, whether customers queue across the door, and whether there is a calm corner for the owner to do accounts. A short visit usually covers it, and the corrections are often just re-arranging what is already there.

Before you sign a lease or start a fit-out

The cheapest moment to apply Vastu for hotels and restaurants is before the fit-out drawings are final. At that stage you can still choose which side of the unit takes the kitchen, where the cash counter goes and how guests enter, without paying for anything twice. Once gas lines, exhaust ducts and drainage are installed, those choices become expensive.

If you are comparing two or three units, send us the plans and we will read the zones for each one. We will tell you honestly when the difference is small and other factors such as frontage, parking, licences and rent should decide. We never call a space unlucky or use fear to push a choice. For new buildings, see Vastu for new construction, and for refits, our renovation guidance follows the same no-demolition principle.

Working with your architect and team

Hospitality projects involve many people: the owner, an architect or interior designer, a kitchen equipment supplier, a fire consultant and often a franchise brand manual. We fit around them. Our report is written so your designer can act on it directly, with each suggestion marked as easy, needs design input, or best left alone because a safety or brand rule takes priority.
