North-Facing House Vastu

North-facing homes are traditionally linked with opportunity and steady growth. What makes one work is the exact position of the door and how the rooms behind it are arranged.

North-facing house Vastu is about more than the road being on the north. North-facing homes are traditionally linked with opportunity and steady growth, but what makes one work is the exact position of the main door and how the rooms behind it are arranged. This guide covers both, along with the mistakes we see most often and how they are corrected without demolition.

The guidance draws on traditional Vastu Shastra and on homes we have measured with the VIDS™ method: degree-accurate compass readings and a 16-zone map from the centre of the house.

A strong facing, if the door is placed right

In Vastu tradition, the north is associated with Kubera and with opportunity, and a north-facing entrance is considered favourable. In Bangalore’s climate a north-facing front also stays cooler, since the harsh sun falls on the south and west sides.

The details matter. The north wall has eight entrance positions, and the ones near the north-west corner are not traditionally favoured. Inside, the north should be kept open and light, which is easy to undo with a heavy staircase or storage in the wrong place.

What “north facing” really means

The north zone runs from 348.75 to 11.25 degrees, with north-north-west and north-north-east on either side. A house sold as north facing may actually face 340 or 20 degrees, which moves the entrance into a different zone. We always measure the real degree on site.

About entrance positions

Classical texts divide each side of a building into eight entrance positions (padas). Different schools of Vastu name and rank them slightly differently. The positions below follow the most widely used reading, and we confirm them on your actual plan.

Along the north wall, counted from the north-west corner towards the north-east:

  • 1st to 2nd positions (towards the north-west): usually avoided.
  • 3rd to 5th positions: traditionally favoured.
  • 6th to 8th positions (towards the north-east): acceptable with care.

A door in a less favoured position is corrected with threshold treatment, colour and lighting. We never ask anyone to move a door.

Room layout for a north-facing home

With the entrance on the north, a typical favourable layout:

  • Living room: north or north-east, light and open.
  • Kitchen: south-east preferred; north-west is an accepted alternative.
  • Master bedroom: south-west, bed head to south or west.
  • Puja room: north-east, kept clear.
  • Staircase: south, west or south-west, never the north-east.
  • Sump or underground tank: north or north-east.
  • Toilets: west or north-west, away from the north-east and centre.

This is a reference; your plot and its exact degree decide what works.

Keep the north open

The single most important principle for a north-facing home is to keep the north and north-east open, light and free of heavy construction. A front garden, car parking or a wide setback on the north side supports the house. A tall structure, a heavy porch roof or a staircase on that side works against it.

Common mistakes in north-facing homes

The problems we see most often:

  • A main door near the north-west end of the north wall.
  • A staircase in the north or north-east.
  • An overhead tank above the north-east.
  • A toilet in the north-east corner.
  • Heavy storage or a car shed against the north wall.

Each has a correction that works without demolition.

North-facing apartments

In flats, “north facing” usually refers to the main balcony or living room side. We read the flat from its centre and place the actual main door by its own degree, whatever the brochure calls the facing.

Kitchens in north-facing homes

Many north-facing plans put the kitchen in the north-west, which is an accepted alternative to the south-east. Within it, we place the stove so the cook faces east, keep the sink apart from the stove and avoid the kitchen opening straight towards the main door.

Buying a north-facing plot

Check more than the facing: plot shape, cut or extended corners, slope, roads and surroundings. A regular north-facing plot sloping gently towards the north or east is traditionally ideal. See plot Vastu.

Water, sump and overhead tank

North-facing plots suit a sump or underground tank in the north or north-east, and an overhead tank in the south-west. Where the overhead tank sits in the north-east, we mark the better position for the next replacement.

Gates and compound walls

On the north boundary, the gate is traditionally placed in the middle positions or towards the north-east, not at the north-west end. Compound walls on the south and west can be a little higher than those on the north and east.

Bedrooms upstairs

On upper floors, the master bedroom still belongs in the south-west, children’s rooms in the west or north-west, and the north-east room is best kept light, as a study or prayer room.

Corrections without demolition

For existing homes, corrections use room use, bed and desk position, storage, colour, light and a clear centre. We do not sell yantras or products.

How we assess a north-facing house

On site we take compass readings at several points, map the house into 16 zones and scan bedrooms and work areas with the Lecher Antenna. A written report follows within 48 hours. See the sample report.

North facing compared with other facings

North and east are traditionally preferred, but well-planned south and west-facing homes work well too. Compare with east-facing, south-facing and west-facing homes.

Renovating a north-facing house

If you are renovating, use the drawing stage to move a planned staircase or toilet out of the north-east and to open up the north side. See home renovation.

Where Vastu tradition and measurement meet

Traditional Vastu gives the principles; measurement shows how they apply to your house. Our reports separate classical points, on-site readings and interpretation, as set out in our editorial standards.

Fees and booking

Independent houses are assessed at the Bangalore villa and independent house fee, plots at the pre-purchase plot fee and homes elsewhere online. All fees are on our Pricing page.

Living room and entrance foyer

In a north-facing home the living room usually sits on the north side near the entrance, which suits it well. Keep the area just inside the main door open and well lit, with no tall cabinet or shoe rack blocking the path. Large windows on the north bring in soft, even daylight without the glare of direct sun, which makes north-facing living rooms pleasant through most of the year in Bangalore. Seating can be arranged so the family faces north or east.

The north-east corner

In a north-facing plot the north-east corner sits at the front, on the road side. That is good news: it is easy to keep open, as a garden, a sit-out or part of the front setback. Avoid placing the car shed, a security room or a heavy planter there. Inside the house, the north-east room works best as a prayer room, a study or a light sitting area rather than a store or toilet.

Car parking and the front setback

Many Bangalore houses use the front setback for parking. On a north-facing plot, park towards the north-west part of the setback where possible, leaving the north-east side open. A covered car port is best kept light: a simple frame rather than a heavy concrete roof. These small choices preserve the openness that makes a north-facing home work.

Balconies and the upper floor

On upper floors, a balcony or terrace on the north or east side adds to the openness traditionally valued. A balcony that wraps around the south-west corner makes the heaviest zone the most open one, and we suggest balancing it with planters, screens or seating. Water tanks and solar heaters belong on the south-west part of the terrace.

Children and study

North-facing homes often have a bright, calm room on the north or east side that suits a study. We place the desk so the student faces north or east, with a wall behind and daylight from the side, away from the television.

A note on outcomes

Families sometimes expect a north-facing home to bring prosperity by itself. We avoid promising outcomes. A Vastu report is guidance based on classical principles and measured readings, and it sits alongside good planning and good habits, not in place of them.
