House facing

South-East-Facing House Vastu

A south-east-facing home fronts the fire zone, between east and south. With the door in the right position and the kitchen used well, it is a perfectly workable house. Here is how we read it.

South-east-facing house Vastu applies when the road side of a home looks towards the diagonal between east and south. Its front carries part of the east and part of the south, and the corner between them is the south-east, the zone of fire in traditional Vastu. This page explains how we confirm the facing to the degree, which entrance positions work on each face, and how the kitchen, bedrooms and toilets are planned.

South-east facing tends to make buyers nervous, usually because of something they heard rather than anything they measured. In practice these homes are common in Bangalore, many of them are comfortable to live in, and the issues we find are specific and correctable.

What a south-east-facing plot means in Vastu

The label is used in two ways:

  • Tilted plot: a single front boundary facing roughly 124 to 146 degrees, so the front wall runs across east and south zones.
  • Corner plot: roads along the east and south boundaries, with two frontages meeting at the south-east corner.

The reading is the same in principle. The front of the building has an east-side face and a south-side face, and the corner is the south-east. A corner plot lets you choose between two walls for the entrance; a tilted plot gives you one wall whose zone changes along its length.

How south-east-facing house Vastu is measured

We take compass readings at several points, well clear of cars, steel gates, rebar and the electrical meter board that so often sits at the front of these homes. The readings are corrected from magnetic north to true north using the local declination, which you can confirm on the NOAA magnetic declination calculator.

Around this diagonal the Vastu 16-zone map has three bands:

  • East-south-east (ESE): 101.25 to 123.75 degrees.
  • South-east (SE): 123.75 to 146.25 degrees.
  • South-south-east (SSE): 146.25 to 168.75 degrees.

A house sold as east facing at 118 degrees is really east-south-east and leans towards this page; one sold as south facing at 150 degrees is south-south-east. The measured figure goes at the top of the report.

Vastu zones on the two road-facing sides

On a corner plot, the east road side runs from the north-east corner through east and east-south-east to the south-east corner, and the south road side runs from the south-east corner through south-south-east and south towards the south-west. On a tilted plot the front wall usually crosses east, east-south-east, south-east, south-south-east and south.

Traditional Vastu guidance: the east should stay open, the south can be heavier, and the south-east suits fire: cooking, electrical equipment and heat.

What we measure: each wall’s degree, the centre of the house, whether the road cuts or extends the south-east corner, and what is now in the north-east, which on this facing is a side corner that is easily neglected.

Vastu entrance positions on the east face

About entrance positions

Classical texts divide each side into eight entrance positions (padas). Schools differ a little in naming and ranking; we use the most widely followed reading and check it against your plan.

Along the east face, count from the north-east corner towards the south-east:

  • 1st to 2nd positions: acceptable with care.
  • 3rd to 5th positions: traditionally favoured.
  • 6th to 8th positions (at the south-east end): usually avoided.

On a south-east corner plot the east road is usually the better choice for the main door, provided the door stays in the middle of the face rather than sliding to the corner.

Vastu entrance positions on the south face

Along the south face, count from the south-east corner towards the south-west:

  • 1st to 2nd positions (near the south-east): acceptable with care.
  • 3rd to 4th positions: traditionally favoured.
  • 5th to 8th positions (towards the south-west): usually avoided.

A south-face door is fine in the favoured positions. The two placements we correct most on this facing are the far south-east end of the east face and the south-west half of the south face.

A door on a single diagonal wall

Where the plot is tilted, we plot the door by its degree from the centre. A door reading east-south-east follows east-side guidance; one reading south-south-east follows south-side guidance. A door centred on the south-east line is where opinions in the classical schools differ most, so the report sets out the choices and our reasoning, not a slogan.

Kitchen, bedroom and toilet placement in south-east-facing house Vastu

With the front at the south-east, the north-west lies diagonally opposite at the back, the north-east is on the east side and the south-west on the south side.

  • Kitchen: south-east, which here is at the front. This is one facing where the traditional kitchen zone falls naturally on the road side. The cook faces east. Our kitchen guide covers counter and sink placement.
  • Master bedroom: south-west, along the south side towards the back, bed head to south or west.
  • Children’s room: west or north-west, at the back.
  • Puja space: north-east, on the east side. Give it a window if you can.
  • Toilets: north-west or west at the back. Keep them out of the north-east side passage.
  • Staircase: south or south-west along the south side.

Treat this as a reference. Plot size, the measured degree and family needs shape the final plan.

Fire, water and the south-east front

Traditional Vastu guidance: fire and water are kept apart. The south-east takes the stove, the inverter and the meter board; water sources belong in the north and north-east.

What we measure: in Bangalore the municipal water line and drainage usually enter from the road, so builders often put the sump right at the front, in the south-east. We record it, but we do not ask anyone to break an existing sump. We balance the zone through use, colour and keeping the north-east side clean and open, and we mark the better sump position for a future rebuild.

Common south-east-facing layouts in Bangalore

On typical 30 by 40 and 30 by 50 sites the plan often has the kitchen and a car porch at the front, the living room in the middle and bedrooms at the back. Points we check:

  • A sump and borewell in the front south-east, as described above.
  • A narrow, dark north-east side passage that collects scrap, cylinders and a washing area.
  • The main door at the corner because the porch took the middle of the frontage.
  • An overhead tank above the kitchen rather than over the south-west.

Midday sun falls on the south half of the frontage, so a deep sunshade or verandah on that face improves comfort without any structural change.

Myths about south-east-facing house Vastu

  • Myth: a south-east facing brings quarrels or accidents. We have no evidence that a facing causes such things, and we will not use fear to sell a consultation.
  • Myth: a kitchen facing the road is inauspicious. On this facing the front is the traditional kitchen zone.
  • Myth: it is as good as east facing because it contains east. Only if the door actually sits in the east-side favoured positions. The degree decides.
  • Myth: Vastu can guarantee wealth or health. It cannot. It improves light, air and the way a home is used.

Vastu corrections without demolition

For an existing south-east-facing home, corrections start with what is already built: opening up and lighting the north-east side passage, moving clutter and cylinders out of it, using the south-east front for the kitchen and electrical equipment, adjusting the bed and desk, colour by zone and threshold treatment for a corner door. We sell no products and take no commission. When something truly needs construction, the report says so. See zero demolition corrections for the wider approach.

Before you buy or build

Look at the plot shape, whether the south-east corner is extended or cut by the road, the slope and the neighbours. A south-east extension is read differently from a north-east one. If you are building, the drawing stage is the right moment to place the sump, door and staircase well; our new construction service works with your architect. A pre-purchase plot report is ₹5,000.

Fees, visit and report

A home visit usually takes two to four hours, and the written report with every reading, the 16-zone map and prioritised corrections reaches you within 48 hours; see the sample report. A Bangalore independent house or villa is ₹25,000, an apartment ₹15,000 and an online consultation ₹5,000. Details are on the consultation fees page, and you can book a consultation any time. An online assessment uses traditional Vastu only, the 16-zone map and the 3×3 grid drawn on your plan; geopathic stress readings need a site visit.

South-east-facing apartments

In an apartment, south-east facing usually describes the side the balcony or living room looks towards, not the flat’s own door, which may open off a corridor on any side. We read the flat as a unit from its own centre, place the main door by its measured degree and check that the kitchen falls in the south-east part of the flat. The building’s facing matters less than the plan of the flat itself. Our apartment Vastu page explains how a flat is assessed, including online when a visit is not practical.

Frequently asked questions.

Is a south-east-facing house good as per Vastu?

It can be. The south-east is the zone of fire, which suits a kitchen at the front. The door position and the treatment of the north-east, at the side, decide how well the house works.

Where should the main door be in a south-east-facing house?

On the east face, the third to fifth positions counted from the north-east corner; on the south face, the third and fourth counted from the south-east corner. Positions at the south-east corner itself need correction.

Is a sump at the front of a south-east-facing house a problem?

Traditionally water is kept out of the south-east. An existing sump is not dug up; we note it, balance the zone with use and colour, and mark a better position for any future rebuild.

Can the master bedroom be at the front in a south-east-facing house?

The south-west is preferred, which on this facing is along the south side. A bedroom in the front south-east is not ideal but can be managed with bed position and colour.
