South-facing house Vastu is the subject of more worry than any other facing, and most of it is unnecessary. South-facing houses carry a reputation they do not deserve. With the main door in the right position and a sensible layout, a south-facing home can work as well as any other. This guide explains how, along with the mistakes to avoid and how existing homes are corrected without demolition.
The guidance draws on traditional Vastu Shastra and on homes measured with the VIDS™ method: degree-accurate compass readings and a 16-zone map from the centre of the house.
Why south facing gets a bad name
Many buyers in Bangalore avoid south-facing plots, and they are often priced lower as a result. The fear usually comes from a simplified rule that south is the direction of Yama. Classical Vastu is more precise than that: it identifies specific entrance positions on the south wall that are favourable, and others that are not.
A south-facing house also has natural strengths. The south is meant to be heavier and more closed, and the road-side compound wall and front structures do exactly that. The kitchen fits naturally into the south-east.
What “south facing” really means
The south zone runs from 168.75 to 191.25 degrees, with south-south-east and south-south-west on either side. A house sold as south facing may actually face 160 or 200 degrees, which changes where the door falls. Measuring the real degree on site is essential.
Main door positions in south-facing house Vastu
Classical texts divide each side of a building into eight entrance positions (padas). Different schools of Vastu name and rank them slightly differently. The positions below follow the most widely used reading, and we confirm them on your actual plan.
Along the south wall, counted from the south-east corner towards the south-west:
- 1st to 2nd positions: acceptable with care.
- 3rd to 4th positions: traditionally favoured.
- 5th to 8th positions (towards the south-west): usually avoided.
A door towards the south-west corner is the placement we most often correct, with threshold treatment, colour and lighting. No demolition.
Room layout for a south-facing home
With the entrance on the south, a typical favourable layout:
- Kitchen: south-east, which a south-facing plan accommodates easily.
- Master bedroom: south-west, bed head towards south.
- Living room: towards the north or east at the back, where it stays open.
- Puja room: north-east.
- Staircase and overhead tank: south or west.
- Open area: more open space towards the north and east at the back of the plot.
Your plot and its exact degree decide the details.
Open space at the back
In a south-facing plot, the north and east are at the back. Keeping more open area there, a back garden, utility yard or wider setback, balances the closed front. This is often easier than people expect, because the front setback is usually needed for parking anyway.
Common mistakes in south-facing homes
The problems we see most often:
- A main door towards the south-west corner.
- Building right up to the north and east boundaries, leaving no open space at the back.
- A toilet or staircase in the north-east.
- Large glazing in the south-west making it the most open zone.
Each has a non-structural correction or a plan for the next renovation.
South-facing myths
“South-facing houses bring bad luck.” The entrance position decides it, not the facing. Favourable positions exist on the south wall.
“A south door must be changed.” We measure its exact degree and correct with threshold, colour and lighting.
“South-facing plots are a bad investment.” They are often cheaper. With the right layout they can be good value.
South-facing apartments
In flats, the facing usually refers to the balcony side. We read the flat as a unit and place the actual door by its own degree. A south-facing balcony in a flat is common and manageable with sensible use of the space.
Buying a south-facing plot
Yes, you can buy one, if the plot shape is good and the house can be planned with a favourable entrance. We check shape, slope, roads and surroundings before purchase. See plot Vastu.
Kitchens in south-facing homes
The south-east corner sits at the front of a south-facing plot, a natural place for the kitchen. Within it, place the stove so the cook faces east and keep the sink apart from the stove.
Water, sump and overhead tank
The sump or underground tank goes towards the north or north-east at the back of the plot, the overhead tank in the south-west. Both work well with a south-facing layout.
Gates and compound walls
On the south boundary, place the gate in the favoured middle positions, away from the south-west corner. A solid, slightly higher south compound wall is consistent with traditional guidance.
Corrections without demolition
For existing south-facing homes, corrections use room use, bed and desk position, storage, colour, light and a clear centre. We do not sell yantras or products.
How we assess a south-facing house
On site we take compass readings at several points, map the house into 16 zones and scan with the Lecher Antenna. A written report follows within 48 hours. See the sample report.
Compared with other facings

Climate advantages
In Bangalore, a south-facing front takes the midday sun, while the north and east rooms at the back stay cooler and get soft light. Shading the south front with a verandah or trees, which is good climate practice, also fits Vastu guidance for a heavier south.
Bedrooms upstairs
On upper floors, the master bedroom stays in the south-west, children’s rooms in the west or north-west, and the north-east room light, as a study or prayer room.
Renovating a south-facing house
Use the drawing stage to move a planned staircase or toilet out of the north-east and to keep the back of the plot open. See home renovation.
Where Vastu tradition and measurement meet
Our reports separate classical Vastu points, on-site readings and interpretation, as set out in our editorial standards.
Fees and booking
Independent houses are assessed at the Bangalore villa and independent house fee, plots at the pre-purchase plot fee and homes elsewhere online. See our Pricing page.
Living room and entrance foyer
In a south-facing home the main door opens from the south, but the best place for the main living space is often towards the north or east, deeper into the house, where it stays cooler and gets softer light. A short entrance foyer that leads into a living room on the north or east side works well. Keep the foyer itself uncluttered and well lit, with storage placed against the south or west walls rather than blocking the path.
Car parking and the front setback
The front setback of a south-facing plot is usually used for parking. That suits the south, which is traditionally heavier and more closed. A covered car port on the south side is consistent with that guidance. What matters more is keeping the north and east at the back open, so resist the temptation to build an outhouse or store there.
Balconies and terraces
Upper-floor balconies are pleasant on the north and east, where they get soft light. A south balcony takes strong sun and works best shaded. On the terrace, water tanks and solar heaters belong on the south-west part, which also helps keep the north-east of the terrace open.
Children and study
In south-facing homes, the quietest and brightest study space is often at the back on the north or east side. We place the desk so the student faces north or east with a wall behind and daylight from the side.
A south-facing home we often see
A common Bangalore example: a 30 by 40 south-facing plot with the door at the south-west end of the front wall, the kitchen in the south-east, a staircase in the north-east and the master bedroom in the north-west. The corrections we usually suggest are to treat the door threshold and lighting, keep the north-east staircase area light and uncluttered, and move the master bedroom to the south-west room if one exists. None of it requires construction.
Frequently asked questions.
Is a south-facing house bad as per Vastu?
No. With the main door in a favourable position and the layout planned well, a south-facing house works well. The facing alone does not decide it.
Where should the main door be in a south-facing house?
Along the south wall, the third and fourth of the eight positions counted from the south-east corner are traditionally favoured.
Can I buy a south-facing plot?
Yes, if the plot shape is good and the house can be planned with a favourable entrance. We check the plot before you buy.
How do you correct a south-facing door without changing it?
With threshold treatment, colour and lighting chosen for the exact zone, after measuring the door's degree.
