South-west-facing house Vastu is the facing we are asked about most anxiously. The road side of the plot looks towards the diagonal between south and west, so the front carries part of the south and part of the west, and the corner between them is the south-west. Many buyers are told to walk away from such homes. This page explains what the facing really means, how we measure it, which door positions work on each face and how the rooms are planned.
Our honest view: a south-west facing is not automatically bad. Tradition asks the south-west to be the heaviest, most closed part of a house, and a road plus a front setback naturally opens it up. The work is to restore that balance through planning and placement, which is usually possible without breaking anything.
What south-west facing means in Vastu
Listings use the phrase for two kinds of site:
- Tilted plot: one front boundary facing roughly 214 to 236 degrees, so the front wall runs across south and west zones.
- Corner plot: roads on the south and the west boundaries, with two frontages meeting at the south-west corner.
Both are read the same way in principle: a south-side face, a west-side face and the south-west corner between them. On a corner plot you can choose which wall takes the entrance; on a tilted plot the one front wall changes zone as it runs across.
How south-west-facing house Vastu is measured
We read the compass at several points inside and around the house, away from cars, grilles, columns and meter boards, and convert the result from magnetic to true north using the local declination. The NOAA magnetic declination calculator gives the same figure we use.
In the Vastu 16-zone map, three bands sit around this diagonal:
- South-south-west (SSW): 191.25 to 213.75 degrees.
- South-west (SW): 213.75 to 236.25 degrees.
- West-south-west (WSW): 236.25 to 258.75 degrees.
This matters a great deal here. A house dismissed as south-west facing sometimes measures 205 or 245 degrees, which puts the front in south-south-west or west-south-west and changes the door advice. We never judge the facing by eye.
Vastu zones on the two road-facing sides
On a corner plot, the south road side runs from the south-east corner through south and south-south-west to the south-west corner, and the west road side runs from the south-west corner through west-south-west and west towards the north-west. On a tilted plot the front wall usually spans south, south-south-west, south-west, west-south-west and west.
Traditional Vastu guidance: south and west can be heavier and higher than north and east, and the south-west should be the most solid corner of all.
What we measure: the exact degree of each wall, the centre of the house, whether the south-west corner is cut or extended by the road, and how open the north-east at the back really is.
Vastu entrance positions on the south face
Classical texts divide each side of a building into eight entrance positions (padas). Schools rank them slightly differently; we follow the most widely used reading and confirm it on your plan.
Along the south face, count from the south-east corner towards the south-west:
- 1st to 2nd positions (near the south-east): acceptable with care.
- 3rd to 4th positions: traditionally favoured.
- 5th to 8th positions (towards the south-west): usually avoided.
On a south-west corner plot the favoured south positions sit towards the south-east half of the face, which is often a practical place for the main door anyway.
Vastu entrance positions on the west face
Along the west face, count from the south-west corner towards the north-west:
- 1st to 2nd positions (at the south-west end): usually avoided.
- 3rd to 4th positions: traditionally favoured.
- 5th position: acceptable with care.
- 6th to 8th positions (towards the north-west): usually avoided.
Put the two faces together and the pattern is clear: doors close to the south-west corner are the ones to avoid, and doors in the middle of either face are generally sound.
When the front wall is diagonal
On a tilted plot with one front wall, we place the door by its measured degree from the centre of the house. A door in south-south-west follows south-side guidance and one in west-south-west follows west-side guidance. A door right on the south-west axis is the placement we most often need to correct on this facing, and the report explains how.
We rotate the combined entrance diagram to your measured angle and lay it over the plan so the door’s position is visible, not argued about.
Kitchen, bedroom and toilet placement in south-west-facing house Vastu
With the front at the south-west, the north-east sits diagonally opposite at the back, the south-east is on the south side and the north-west on the west side.
- Master bedroom: south-west, which here is at the front. A solid wall to the road, fewer openings on that side and heavy curtains handle the noise.
- Kitchen: south-east, on the south side, or north-west on the west side as an accepted alternative.
- Children or guest rooms: west or north-west.
- Puja and living spaces: towards the north-east at the back, where the house should be lightest.
- Toilets: west or north-west. Avoid the south-west corner, the north-east and the centre.
- Staircase: south-west, south or west. On this facing a front staircase is in the right place.
This is a reference only. The site, the measured degree and your family’s routine decide the actual plan; our bedroom guide covers the details of bed and wardrobe placement.
Weight at the front, openness at the back
Traditional Vastu guidance: the south-west should be heavy and high, the north-east open and low.
What we measure: building bylaws require a front setback, so a south-west-facing plot starts with its south-west open. We look for ways to put weight back: the staircase and overhead tank at the front south-west, a solid compound wall within the permitted height, large planters or a covered car porch. At the back, we check that the north-east is not filled with a toilet, a store or a utility shed, because on tight Bangalore sites the rear setback is often the first space to be built over.
Typical Bangalore south-west-facing homes
On 30 by 40 and 30 by 50 sites the front often has the car porch and an open setback, with the living room behind and bedrooms upstairs. Points worth checking:
- The main door at the south-west corner, where the porch leaves room for it.
- A low, open front with a light grille gate and no weight on the south-west.
- A rear north-east covered by a toilet or utility to gain space.
- Afternoon heat on the frontage, since both front faces take the strong south and west sun.
The heat is a comfort issue as much as a Vastu one. A deep verandah, sunshades or a row of trees on the west face helps both.
Myths about south-west-facing house Vastu
- Myth: south-west facing is automatically bad. It is not. It needs more care with the door and with weight, and that care is usually possible.
- Myth: south-west facing brings illness or debt. We have no evidence for that, and no layout can promise or prevent such outcomes. Vastu improves light, air, movement and how a home is used.
- Myth: the only fix is a new door. Doors are treated in place with threshold work, colour and lighting.
- Myth: you need remedial products. We sell none and take no commission.
Vastu corrections without demolition
For an existing south-west-facing home, we begin with weight and use: moving heavy wardrobes and storage to the south-west, using the front south-west room as the master bedroom, clearing and lighting the rear north-east, reducing clutter at the back, choosing colours by zone and treating a corner door with threshold and lighting. If a change truly needs construction, such as a toilet built into the rear north-east, we say so and mark the better position for your next renovation. Our article on zero demolition corrections explains the method.
Buying a south-west-facing plot
Do not reject a plot on its facing alone. Check the shape, whether the south-west corner is cut, whether the land slopes up towards the south-west (traditionally preferred) or down, and whether a favoured door position is possible on either face. Our plot Vastu service gives a written pre-purchase report for ₹5,000.
Fees, visit and report
A home visit usually takes two to four hours. Within 48 hours you receive a written report with every reading, the 16-zone map and corrections in priority order; the sample report shows what to expect. A Bangalore independent house or villa is ₹25,000, an apartment ₹15,000 and an online consultation ₹5,000. See the consultation fees or book a consultation. An online assessment uses traditional Vastu only, the 16-zone map and the 3×3 grid drawn on your plan; geopathic stress readings need a site visit.
Renovating a south-west-facing house
If you are renovating anyway, the drawing stage is the cheapest moment to improve the plan: shifting a new main door away from the south-west corner when the facade is being rebuilt, placing a new staircase or overhead tank at the front south-west, and keeping any extension at the back away from the north-east. We work from your architect’s drawings and mark each change against the measured 16-zone map. Our home renovation Vastu page explains how we coordinate with architects and contractors.
Frequently asked questions.
Is a south-west-facing house bad as per Vastu?
Not automatically. It asks for more care than some facings: the door away from the south-west corner, weight at the front and openness at the back. Planned that way, it works.
Where should the main door be in a south-west-facing house?
On the south face, the third and fourth positions counted from the south-east corner; on the west face, the third and fourth counted from the south-west corner. Doors at the south-west corner itself need correction.
Can the master bedroom be at the front in a south-west-facing house?
Yes. The south-west is the traditional zone for the master bedroom, and on this facing it is at the front. Thick curtains and a solid wall to the road help with noise.
Should I avoid buying a south-west-facing plot?
Not on the facing alone. Check the shape, slope, corners and whether a good door position is possible. A pre-purchase report answers that before you commit.
